Enamelled and painted snuffboxes became common in early-eighteenth-century Europe. The decorations on this box depict the goddess of hunting, Diana, and the goddess of marriage, Juno. Inside the lid is an illustration of a love scene between the chief deity Zeus, here in the form of a swan, and the maiden Leda.
