In Aux Courses (1883) by Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905), a fashionably attired Parisian lady follows a horse race while leaning against the banister of the stands. Edelfelt has used the pastel technique he commonly applied from the early 1880s onwards, especially to works depicting female subjects. Although Aux Courses has a very Parisian feel, it was painted in November in Helsinki. Both the subject and the softness of the technique bring to mind the French impressionists.
