Potpourri urn, rococo

Marieberg, Sweden, c. 1760-1765.

Faience.

27,5 cm x 18,5 cm.

Potpourri or scent urns were fashionable items in the 1700s. The lidded urns were filled with layers of scented herbs, rose petals and salt.

The urn in the collection is Chinese-inspired, decorated with sculpted roses and branches. A parrot sits atop the lid, while small beetles and ladybirds climb up the surface.
