Albert Edelfelt
Dolores, a Toledan girl

1881

Oil on canvas.

29,0 cm x 24,5 cm.

Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) travelled to Spain in the spring of 1881. He was particularly impressed by the country’s former capital, Toledo, which would be the setting for this oil painting of Dolores, a Toledan girl aged 15, who is shown here wearing a shawl and decorative earrings. Edelfelt wrote to his mother about the painting, saying it was “among the best I am bringing back to Finland.” The painting was not on public view for over a century, until it was bought by the Reitz Foundation’s art collection in 2014.
