In Jetty in the Moonlight (1882), Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) depicted an idyllic scene over a bay at night. He painted it in the seaside town of Haikko, where the family had bought a summer villa in 1880: it would become a home from home where Edelfelt spent almost every summer until his death. Edelfelt worked avidly in Haikko, painting not only members of his family but also the region’s magnificent views. Jetty in the Moonlight captures a Finnish summer’s night at its most beautiful, also evincing the artist’s deep emotional connection with his homeland.
