Albert Edelfelt
Out at Sea

1880

Oil on canvas.

23,0 cm x 20,0 cm.

In Out at Sea (1880), Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) depicts a young girl and an older fisherman sailing in the sun on the bay at Haikko. The models for the painting were Fia Salenius, aged around 10, and a fisherman called Mr Lindström, who were locals. It is a draft of a painting with the same name, which Edelfelt completed three years later, in 1883. With its impressionistic colours and lively brush technique, this work, which was probably painted entirely out of doors, is one of the finest examples of Nordic plein air painting.
