Werner Holmberg (1830–1860) is one of the early masters and pioneers of Finnish landscape painting. He began his art studies in 1853 in Düsseldorf, where he was taught studio painting based on careful observation of nature. Autumn Morning, Ringerike (1859) is partly based on sketches Holmberg made on his honeymoon in Norway. His newly married wife, Anna, was the model for the maid opening the gate. He said that the painting depicted the “feel of an autumnal morning on our honeymoon, but with an added charm for being placed in an idealised landscape.”
