Amélie Lundahl:
By the Seaside

1884

Amélie Lundahl (1850–1914) painted By the Seaside (1884) in Douarnenez, Brittany, a locality to which she was the first Finnish artist to make several painting trips in the early 1880s. The influence of French plein air realism is clearly visible in Lundahl’s way of depicting the light and using colour In By the Seaside, the artist has replicated the soft, even light of the summer’s day using sketchy, wide brushstrokes and harmonious colours. Also the subject is typical of Lundahl, who often liked to depict lonely women lost in thought.
